Park and Recreation Summer Adventure Trips

Salem Park, Recreation and Community Services will be offering field trips this summer for children ages 6-12.  All trips are supervised by Park and Recreation staff.  Registration is required for trips and space is limited.  Sign up for one or all!

*The field trip fee includes bus transportation. 

*Drop off and pick up will take place at the Jean A. Levesque Community Life Center, 401 Bridge St. Salem, MA.

*Children will need to bring a bag lunch, water bottle and snack.

*Children should have a backpack to carry their belongings in.  

*Children should bring a sweatshirt or jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes.  

*We ask parents to apply sunscreen to their child before they leave the house.  If you are sending spray sunscreen with your child, we ask that you put their name on the bottle. Staff can assist with the spray, but can not apply lotion to your child.

Ipswich River Watershed Association
The Ipswich River Watershed Association's headquarters, Riverbend, is located along the Ipswich River. Groups will head out for a supervised kayaking and canoeing adventure downriver to Ipswich's historic downtown and back. While on the river, kids will learn to spot and identify wildlife, get a better understanding of the hydrology and geology of rivers, and how humans interact with waterways. This outing will also include land-based activities on Riverbend's trails and gardens. Boats, paddles and life jackets will be provided. The Ipswich River is not only the premiere paddling destination on the North Shore, but has been recognized as one of the Most Endangered Rivers in America, due to excessive water withdrawals.

Date: Friday, June 30th (rain date of Friday, July 7th)
Time: 8:30am - 3:30pm
Cost: FREE
* children should also bring a beach towel for this trip  * This trip is filled to capacity

Field Trip Schedule:
8:30-8:45am - Drop off at the Community Life Center
8:45am - Bus departs
9:30am - Arrive at Ipswich River Watershed Association, 143 County road Ipswich, MA.
9:45-11:45 am - Split into 2 groups.  Group 1 does land based activities - Group 2 paddle on the Ipswich River.
11:45-12:30pm- Picnic Lunch
12:30-2:30pm - Group 2 does land based activities - Group 1 paddle on the Ipswich River.
3:00pm - Leave Ipswich
3:30pm - Arrive back at the Community Life Center 



Northeastern University's Marine Science Center- Nahant
The Marine Science Center is part of the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences.  Often simply referred to as the MSC, the center is the marine research and educational facility of Northeastern University.  Located on the peninsula at historic East Point in Nahant, the MSC juts into the ocean just five miles north-northeast of the entrance to Boston Harbor.  This field trip will include hands on outdoor and indoor activities that explore the marine live we have on the Northshore.  Activiites will include touch tanks, tidepool exploration, a walking tour and up-close experience with marine life.

Date: Friday, July 21st (no rain date: this trip will run under most weather conditions)
Time: 8:15am-1:00pm
Cost: $10.00 per child
children should also bring a towel and change of clothes and shoes for this trip.  * This trip is filled to capacity.  Wait list only.

8:20am-8:30am:
Drop off at the Salem Community Life Center
8:30am: Bus Departs
9:00am: Arrive at the Marine Science Center
9:00am-12:00pm: - Rocky shore exploration stations
- Rocky shore data collection
-Touch tanks
- East Point walking tour
12:00pm- Picnic lunch on site
12:30pm- Board bus and leave Nahant
1:00pm- Arrive back at the Community Life Center
